A Keen Eye: Photography by Dean Manis

A Keen Eye: Photography by Dean Manis

As an artist, Dean Manis has had many gallery showings of his paintings, drawings, and intaglio prints. Though he has been a renowned photographer for more than 50 years, this stunning TFAC exhibit is the first public showing of his work behind the lens.
A Unique and Inspiring Perspective

The photographs of Dean Manis, born in Brooklyn, currently residing in Washington, DC and Boca Raton, capture moments and views traveling in the US and Europe. A Keen Eye: Photography by Dean Manis is a selection of prints curated from a large body of work dating from the 1970s to the present. Mr. Manis uses 35mm, medium format, and 4×5 film cameras, and makes his own prints in the darkroom

His interest in photography began at an early age, and has stayed with him as a continuing passion, even as he studied music and literature in college, attended law school, lived in France studying painting, and practiced law in NYC and Washington DC. Mr. Manis has had several gallery shows of his paintings, intaglio prints, and drawings in Washington.

A Keen Eye: Photography by Dean Manis is the first public exhibition of his photographs. It is curated by Sarah Schroth, director Ermita of the Nasher Museum of Art, who retired in Tryon and has known and admired the artist’s work for four decades.

Included in the selection are landscapes, architecture, cityscapes, portraits and urban scenesformalist images inspired by the masters of film photography. (There is a stunning photograph of Edward Weston’s desk in the show).

“These are not particularly unusual subjects, but they were taken with a unique and personal viewpoint, often shot from an uncommon angle. Dean Manis is a true undiscovered talent with a keen eye,” Schroth says, “I want my fellow citizens of Tryon to experience these astonishing photographs.”
