Quentin Baxter’s African Marketplace—Celebrating Abdullah Ibrahim
Quentin Baxter Quintet plays the music of Abdullah Ibrahim for one incredible, impactful afternoon at TFAC!
Grammy award-winning drummer, producer, composer, and educator Quentin E. Baxter brings a powerhouse band to kick off Tryon Fine Arts Center’s 2025 – 2026 Stage Door Jazz Series, in a performance that commemorates the impactful and soul-stirring music of the internationally-renowned, South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim.
“I was introduced to the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio during a performance in the Cistern Yard at the College of Charleston. Hearing them play was literally a spiritual connection for me. Not to be sacrilegious, but that became my spiritual path — that music, that expression, that sincerity, the purity, along with his rhythms, and his melodies. He is the South African composer not just of our day, but of all the days … I find joy playing this music.” – Quentin Baxter
About Abdullah Ibrahim

Ibrahim’s relatable sound appeals to audiences across cultures and generations, much of which reflects his influences growing up in Cape Town. Woven through his vivacious music are township and traditional African Folk songs, Indian ragas, AME Church hymns and gospel, modern jazz and even, western pop music. Ibrahim, at 91-years-old, continues to create and tour.
