In this endearing romantic comedy, Charles, a charming though somewhat bumbling, always late, and unlucky-in-love English bachelor attends a series of weddings and one devastating funeral, along with a group of his close friends. At one wedding where he is serving as the best man, he meets Carrie, an American journalist working on assignment in England.
For Charles, it is love at first sight. Carrie is undeniably attracted to him, but is looking for a more casual relationship. Still a sweet romance develops, and over the course of ten months, this would-be couple try to connect, but something always seems to keep them apart, until finally, they go their separate ways with occasional romantic encounters.
One problem, among many, that Charles faces, is that he’s still in love with Carrie, but cannot express his feelings adequately. When he re-connects with ex-girlfriend, Henrietta, he questions whether Carrie was really “the one,” after all, and perhaps he should settle for a life with his former lover. Will Charles listen to his heart? Or is he, once again, too late?
