Building Community One Tune at a Time
Pacolet Junior Appalachian Musicians (PacJAM) provides an opportunity for area youth to experience community through the joy of participating in traditional music.
PacJAM teaches the importance and joy of music and community through weekly group instrument instruction, coached multi-instrument JAMs, singing, and weekly insights into the people, places, and events that contribute to Appalachian music and culture. Youth ages 8 through high school may choose instruction for beginner, intermediate or advanced guitar, mandolin, fiddle, bass, banjo, and dulcimer. Students ages 6-8 get their start on ukulele.
Beginning and Intermediate students will attend 40 minutes of music enrichment, story-telling, mini-concerts with guest musicians, and learn about the heritage of the music and region. They will also have 40 minutes of group lesson classes, and 40 minutes of singing or JAM rehearsal.
Advanced students will have 40 minutes of group instrument lessons, followed by 30 minutes of advanced singing including harmony and shape-note singing, followed by 50 minutes of coached small-ensemble rehearsal.
