Rental partner Tryon Little Theater presents its Summer Youth Production of the stage musical Bye Bye Birdie, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams. The production will feature area youth in this musical set in 1958. The production, which will take over the main stage at Tryon Fine Arts Center for its four-day run, will be directed by Jennifer O’Rear, and musical direction will be provided by Pam McNeil.

The play’s book was influenced when Elvis Presley was drafted in the Army in 1957. The rock star’s name, “Conrad Birdie” is word play on the name of country music legend Conway Twitty. Presley and Twitty were rock ‘n’ roll rivals in the 1950s.

The original Broadway production was a Tony Award-winning success. The show has become a popular production for youth due to its variable cast size. and large portion of ensemble numbers.
